Shpock is a mobile and browser-based online marketplace that allows people to purchase and sell items privately in their neighborhood. You may buy and sell attractive used and new items in a variety of categories, including electronics, fashion, baby and children’s stuff, and home and garden furniture, as well as specialized hobbies like vehicles and property. Shpock was founded in Vienna, Austria, in 2012 by Katharina Klausberger and Armin Strbac.
Shpock was created and is maintained by finderly GmbH, an Austrian start-up that employs 102 employees. Russmedia Equity Partners owns Finderly GmbH.
In September 2012, Shpock, short for Shop in Your Pocket, was introduced to the public. Initially, the software was only available to users who spoke German. The app has already been downloaded over 100,000 times in less than three months. Within the first year, the app was downloaded over a million times.
Shpock expanded into new markets in 2014, including the United Kingdom (among others). As a result, Shpock’s downloads increased from 1.2 million in mid-2013 to over 10 million by August 2015.
The company’s consistent growth eventually put it on the map — and made it a desirable acquisition target. Shpock stated in September 2015 that Schibsted Classifieds Media (which has a portfolio of more than 25 classifieds websites) had paid $214 million for 91 percent of the company, three years after it launched.
The app has been downloaded over 50 million times on iOS and Android devices as of October 2018.
Shpock (together with some of Adevinta’s other assets) was sold to Russmedia Equity Partners, a hedge fund focusing in online marketplaces and SaaS enterprises, in June 2021. The cost was not revealed.
The company’s goal, according to Russmedia, is to strengthen Shpock’s market position in the United Kingdom while also doubling down on existing markets.

How Does Shpock Work?

Shpock, an online marketplace, allows users to buy and sell a variety of items. Customers can choose from a number of different categories, including:
- Garden & Home
- The electronic sector
- The fashion industry
- Automobiles & Motors
… and several others. Shpock can be accessed through the company’s website or mobile app (available on both Android and iOS devices).
To use the service, users must either register on the website or download the app. After that, a user can list the products they want to sell by uploading a photo, writing a description, and choosing on a price range.
If a consumer is interested in purchasing the product, they can make an offer straight on the website. If you want, you can also make a wish list.
A buyer has the option of completing a transaction on or off the site (e.g., by paying in cash when meeting in person).
In rare situations, Shpock even provides buyer protection to secure its customers’ money.
How Does Shpock Make Money?
Shpock earns money through selling ad space on its site, charging subscription fees, and referring clients.
1. Fees for Subscriptions
Aside from the normal user, there are quite a few people who sell stuff professionally on Shpock.
For these professional merchants, Shpock offers a membership service. The following features are included in the Shpock+ Shops subscription:
a. With the Shop Manager function, owners can list products, organize them according to various criteria,
b. manage sales status,
c. provide advanced reporting and customer support devoted to their account…
plus a number of others Shpock’s monthly subscription levels are now priced from €19 and €99 per month (prices paid on an annual basis).
2. Fees for Advertising
Shpock vendors can use the platform to sell and differentiate their products.
Advertisers will be able to insert banners and video advertising in a variety of places on the page, including the top and sidebar. Advertisements are available on both mobile and desktop platforms.
Shpock gets paid every time a buyer sees a piece of advertising (also called as an impression). Advertisers create a monthly budget from which funds are deducted.
3. Fees for Referrals
Shpock underwent a major overhaul in November 2019, transforming it from a local listing platform to a transactional one. As part of the initiative, participants were given access to a digital wallet, an in-app payment mechanism, and buyer protection.
Although this has not been confirmed, Shpock is supposed to collect a tiny percentage of each shipment order as referral fees from certain shipping businesses.
